Campos Thermal Power Plant Substation

Challenge

Eletrobras required the execution of a critical capacity expansion project at the Campos Thermal Power Plant Substation, in Rio de Janeiro, with an extremely tight deadline: only 80 days between contract signing and the energization of the last transformer.

This short window was established by the local distribution company, representing the only window until 2026 to carry out the intervention without affecting power supply. The challenge was to execute a highly technically complex project within an ambitious schedule, ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

The Solution

BR Infra developed an agile, integrated action plan, prioritizing the following work fronts:

• Replacement of transformers TR1 and TR3 (138/69/13.8 kV – 73 MVA each);
  Replacement of a 138 kV disconnector;
• Reconductoring of the 69 kV busbars, carried out using remote live-line work methods.

The construction coordination led by our team was decisive for the project’s success, ensuring engagement from everyone involved, clear communication with stakeholders, and rigorous application of safety standards.

The project’s success was ensured by a strategic execution, which involved:

• Direct integration between BR Infra and Eletrobras for critical decisions;
• Rigorous schedule management with daily monitoring;
• Use of specialized live-line work techniques, optimizing execution time;
• Engagement of the construction team and coordination of third-party teams, ensuring integration among stakeholders.

A safety culture applied across 100% of activities, ensuring employee integrity.

Results Achieved

• Project completed in a record time of 80 days, meeting the client’s expectations;
• Increase in transformation capacity from 107 MVA to 166 MVA;
• Continuity and reliability in the power supply for the region;
• Assurance that execution would not be delayed until 2026.
